Robert Birmelin is best known for his panic imbued crowded New York scene paintings. He draws inspiration from the myriad of environments found in New York City, where he teaches, and at his summer home on Deer Isle, Maine. His work can be seen in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Hirshhorn Museum, and Brooklyn Museum, among others.
