Cohen painted scenes in Provincetown and Manhattan finding similar resonance and quiet images of peaceful contemplation in both locations, despite the obvious differences between cityscape and the sea. He observed people in their everyday or out-of-the-ordinary moments, sketched these scenes constantly, shot endless movie footage and still photos and made a profound impression on everyone he met. Cohen’s paintings provide a means toward discovering the gesture as a constructive component in painting architectonic shapes. His first important works were of Italian Baroque cathedrals in Rome. His works are in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
