Eldzier Cortor: Etching and Aquatint

Selection by Morghan Williams

Eldzier Cortor (January 10, 1916 - November 26, 2015) was an African American artist and printmaker who was influenced by both African art and European surrealism. In addition to the surreal and abstract elements that are present in his paintings and prints, Cortor is also known for his depictions of Black figures and for featuring Black women as central subjects in his work.

Kathy collaborated with Cortor in the last years of his life in her studio where she printed 16 of the plates he had made at The Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop.
