Born: 1955 (Brodsky), 1955 (Utkin). Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin became part of a movement called the Paper Architects that was categorized by the elaborate, impossible architectural designs on paper. The movement was born in response to the utilitarianism of the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s. From the early 1980s, Brodsky and Utkin collaborated primarily on etchings, working on each copper plate for years. Their dense style of engraving emulates the antique appearance of prints from the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries. Brodsky represented Russia in the 2006 Venice Biennale. Their work is in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. In 1989 Brodsky and Utkin came to the United States invited by Ronald Feldman. During that time, Kathy editioned 36 copper plates brought from Russia with the artists.
